— Why Mainspring
What a good workshop
actually looks like
Choosing where to bring a watch is a decision about trust. Here is what you can reasonably expect from Mainspring, and why those things matter.

Six things that matter
Specialist experience
Over a decade of focused workshop practice, not general jewellery repair spread thin. Mechanical movements are what we know.
Reversible at every step
We don't do things to a watch that can't be undone. Every method is chosen with the piece's future in mind, not just the immediate job.
Records that travel with the piece
Written condition notes and service records are given to every owner on collection. Your watch's history is yours to keep.
Hand-operated work
Every piece is worked on directly, not processed through a queue of machines. The watchmaker's hands are on it throughout.
Plain, prior communication
You hear what we find, what we propose and what it costs before work starts. We don't present surprises on the invoice.
Transparent pricing
Fixed starting prices for all three services. If scope changes, it's discussed and agreed before any additional cost is incurred.
— Expertise
A practice built on mechanical work
Watch repair done well is a narrow discipline. The skills needed to assess a movement's condition, identify wear patterns, select appropriate lubricants and manage a vintage dial without damage are not the same as general craft skill — they come from years of specific, repetitive practice.
Mainspring's founder spent a decade working on mechanical timepieces before opening the workshop. The team now includes a specialist in surface finishing who handles all case and refinishing work. Between them, most situations encountered in a small independent workshop are within their direct experience.
Mechanical and automatic movements across most major production eras
Dial assessment and cleaning with no alteration to original surface
Brushed and polished case finishing matched to original specification
Lubrication selection appropriate to movement age and type
Accurate timing regulation and rate verification
Written condition assessment before any work begins
Pre- and post-work photography for restoration and refinishing
Owner contacted immediately if anything unexpected is found
Piece stored securely, individually labelled, when not on the bench
Records and images given to owner on collection
— Process
A clear sequence, every time
Our process doesn't vary by piece or by price point. Every watch goes through the same sequence: assessment, documentation, agreement with the owner, work, verification, and handover with records.
This consistency isn't just about professionalism — it's what makes it possible for us to stand behind the work and for owners to understand exactly what was done to their piece.
— Service
Owners remembered, not just managed
A small workshop has one real advantage over a busy service counter: the people who handle your watch are the same people you spoke to when you brought it in. There's no handoff, no translation layer, no information lost between customer service and the bench.
We keep notes on each piece we see, which means that when a watch comes back — whether for a follow-up or the next scheduled care — we already know its history and its owner's preferences.
Direct communication with the watchmaker, not a counter intermediary
Questions answered at drop-off and collection without appointment
Ongoing relationship for Collection Care Plan clients
Piece history retained in workshop records across visits

— What sets us apart
What Mainspring does differently
Scheduled collection care
Most workshops work on pieces that are broken. We offer a structured programme for pieces that aren't — regular upkeep spread across the year, so small collections stay in working order without reactive repairs.
Respect for vintage character
For older and inherited pieces, we treat the original surface and materials as the reference — not an ideal showroom condition. We preserve what's there rather than replacing it with something newer.
Surface matching, not surface standardising
Case refinishing at Mainspring is done by hand, matching the original finish zone by zone. A brushed flank stays brushed; a polished bezel stays polished. The shape of the case is never altered to make finishing easier.
Paperwork that belongs to the owner
Service records, condition notes and photographs are given to the owner, not kept on file as internal records alone. This matters for provenance, resale and the owner's own understanding of their piece.
